‘Maybe Curby will behave himself now,’ said Eleanor. ‘Cross-country is his thing.’

They led their ponies towards the cross-country course, which was set in the beautiful parkland of Barton House.

‘No one has to do anything they’re not comfortable with,’ Naomi explained. ‘But let’s give each other lots of encouragement. Cross-country success is mostly to do with confidence. Before we start, I want everyone to put their stirrup leathers up two holes from normal show jumping length.’

‘Ugh, I hate riding with short stirrups,’ Sabrina groaned.

‘This will make it easier for you to stay balanced,’ Naomi explained, ignoring Sabrina. ‘Between fences I want you to stand up in your stirrups, as you’ll have seen jockeys do, but then you’re going to bring your seat back to the saddle four or five strides before each fence.

‘With cross-country, it’s essential you don’t get in front of your horse or pony. By that I mean too far forward with your balance, because if your pony stops, hits a fence, or stumbles on landing, it’s more than likely you’ll end up over his head and on the ground.’

There were lots of cross-country fences set out – the Pony Club had made full use of the park’s lovely features. Steps had been using some of the natural mounds; there were logs, brush fences, little corner fences, arrowheads, and ditches. Tilly thought it looked just like a miniature version of Badminton!

‘We’re just going to work on three or four fences at a time today,’ said Naomi. ‘We’ll all watch one another and learn from our mistakes.’
